The 7th annual Port Renfrew Marina Salmon Derby Report
The 7th annual Port Renfrew Marina Salmon Derby was held on September 4th and 5th, 2004. There were 206 entrants in this years event in which both the fishing and weather co-operated. By Sunday afternoon 1pm weigh in deadline, it took a salmon in excess of 32 lbs to make the top 12 list. The brother and sister team of Bud and Chic Akiyama, whose combined age totals 166 years, hooked and landed their 49.25 pounder late Saturday afternoon, after fishing nine hours without a bite. Their fish, which was the eventual derby winner, was followed by Mike Styba's 38.5 pounder in second place, and 14 year old Jared Gagen's 37.25 pounder in third place. Judy Thorarinson took the Ladies category with a 35.5 pounder and Trevor Bull took the Juvenile division with his 32 pounder.
Following the BBQ and awards ceremonies, Maurice and Lou Tremblay, who run the San Juan Fish Hatchery, were introduced to the group. They were presented with in excess of $1400 in cash, which represented proceeds from raffle tickets sold on an overhead propane heater and a chainsaw. In addition, a cheque in the amount of $300 was presented to the Tremblays which were proceeds raised from the Ken Long Memorial Derby. These funds will allow more fish to be raised at the hatchery.
Our thanks go out to all who participated in the Derby and also to those who sponsored it. It has been dubbed by many as our best derby yet.
Many of you know and appreciate Noel Atkin for all the help and advice he gives to those who need it at the Marina. Noel , and his wife Pat, were given a trip to LA on a cruise ship, and a 3 night stay at Las Vegas by their friends at the Marina. Have a great holiday, you both deserve it.
