Port Renfrew Marina Report June 26/13

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

At Port Renfrew Marina Chinook fishing is picking up along the beach and should improve more once these big tide changes are finished. We are seeing more anglers coming back to the docks with catches and a few in the high twenties and a couple in the thirties.

The “chicken ranch” continues to be the hot spot for springs, coho and halibut. Grubs, salmon bellies and bait are all good for catching halibut. The new halibut hoochie that is seeming to be a hot one is the Turd. They seem to be the magic lure lately.

Coho can be found at the can-bouy in the hundreds and there seems to be enough hatchery ones to get your limit of two.  Fish at depths of about 30feet. Spoons are all you need for Coho and the coho killers are hot lures also, with just about any color working very well.

Crabbing remains about the same, with some improvement.

Notable catches:

  •  Eric Eckdahl  27 29
  • Bud McGrade   35

Upcoming Events:  Coming up soon on July 26th to the 28th will the the annual Davey Derby held at Port Renfrew Marina. This is a derby that you wouldn’t want to miss, with amazing prizes and just an all around great, fun time. For more info go to  Audie Williams is the founder and brains behind this event and it is done with great intentions to help deserving families and or individuals who are going through tough times and need some help.

Coming up later at the end of summer (who wants to think about that!) but the Port Renfrew Labor Day Derby helps you get past that and have a great time on the Labor Day Derby and it’s also a super derby to attend. The derby is a two day event ending with a dinner, beverages and a live band and you go home with a t-shirt . All proceeds go to the local San Juan Fish Hatchery’s to support them and their work to help keep the salmon stocks plentiful in Vancouver Island, BC and in general Canada. A very good cause since this poor hatchery has not seen any additional funding since 1992.

We want to thank again all customers who support our marina. We want everyone who comes and stays with us to have good memories and know we care about every one.

Port Renfrew Marina Fishing Report June,18/13

Wednesday, June 19th, 2013

For Port Renfrew Marina and the related area salmon fishing along the shore continues to be fairly inconsistent. A couple of slow days are followed by a couple of better days with Logan, East Point and Camper Creek being the best areas.

Offshore the “chicken ranch” is the place to be. Limit catches of Chinook and halibut are common and if the coho are around you can add them to your catch also. “Turd” hoochies are the hot lure run on a purple onion or green glows out there. For those not aware there are new regulations regarding fishing for halibut, see info below.

Effective April 1, 2013 until further notice: The maximum length for halibut is 126 cm. The daily limit for halibut is one (1). The possession limit for halibut is two (2), only one of which may be greater than 83cm in length. There will be an annual limit of six (6) halibut per license.  All halibut retained by the license holder shall be immediately recorded in ink on the Tidal Waters Sport Fishing license.  The area from which each halibut is caught and its length shall immediately be recorded on license.

Crabbing is poor and we think because of the heavy commercial pressure inside the bay.

Notable Catches:

  • Don Brickland  31
  • Wayne Winters  35.8
  • John Gordon  39.5

Don Brickland 31

Wayne Winters 34

Port Renfrew Marina Fishing Report June 3/13

Monday, June 3rd, 2013

For Port Renfrew Marina late May and early June fishing has been spotty along the shore after a unusually great start in May. The cut-pluggers are hooking the majority of the fish. Offshore the “chicken ranch” is producing Chinook down about 150 feet on hoochies and spoons.

Halibut was going strong but has slowed down in the last two days. The NE corner of the bank still seems to be the best spot. A lot of the success in the halibut fishery is very tide and current dependent. Some areas are better on the flood, some on the ebb. Ask one of the regulars for some tips, most are quite willing to share their knowledge. When you come check in at the office and we can give you more up to date info.

Crabbing is coming on again with only one commercial boat out there still. Most are getting their limits.

Notable Catches

  • Randy Hemmingsen    46 halibut
  • Blair Houdayer              28 spring
  • Mike Daines                    63 halibut
  • Bruce Miller of  27 28 35 45 halibut

Reminder: Coming up July 26,27 and 28th will be the 13th annual Davey Derby. This is a great derby running the full weekend and everyone has a great time and all the proceeds go to help a lot of deserving people. Please come and support this event and have a great weekend fishing. For more information go to

At this time we at Port Renfrew Marina want to thank all our loyal customers who stay with us every year and support our business with gestures such as purchasing fuel from us which we know since it has to be trucked out, that we charge a few cents over what it would cost normally and tackle, which most are pleased that we are equal in price to most competitors and often cheaper. These things mean much to us and are not overlooked. So thank you for your support.
