Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug.29/17

Wednesday, August 30th, 2017

For Port Renfrew Marina this report will pretty much mirror the last one. Fantastic fishing and with the exception of Tuesday’s winds, the weather has been the best anyone has seen! Flat calm water and warm sunny skies made for even more enjoyable fishing, you should remember the sun block!

The fish are on the smaller side but there are tons of them. Anchovy is working better than spoons right now but if you do use a spoon, Coho killers are the ones to choose. Again East Point morning and especially the evenings is on fire, Rockpile to Camper is mid afternoon. Even with the rougher waters on Tuesday people were coming back with fish.

Halibut fishermen are getting some on the anchor, could be a good sign for the coming weeks!

Coho Regulations: Quite a few people have come to us asking about regulations and boundaries so we are posting this information for everyone to see.

  • Up to September 5th you are only allowed 2 hatchery Coho in or out of the bay.
  • September 5th: 4 Coho per day only 2 may be wild INSIDE the whistle bouy.
  • Oct. 1st 4 Coho per day, 1 may be wild outside of the whistle bouy.  This means you are allowed to retain 1 wild Coho on the outside, if you want to retain 1 more it has to be caught inside the whistle bouy.
  • No Chinook retention in the bay except for the triangle from Woods Nose to the whistle bouy to East Point.

This coming weekend will be Port Renfrew Marina’s 20th annual Labor Day Derby. The derby starts on Saturday September 2nd and runs until 1:00 on Sunday September 3rd. Tickets are only available at the marina and are $65.00 a rod. This includes a Port Renfrew marina t-shirt, dinner, beverages and a live band on Sunday night. This derby’s proceeds go to the local San Juan salmon hatchery to help them with their ongoing salmon management to help keep the salmon stocks in the area strong, healthy and hopefully in great numbers for the fishermen of today and also for the fishermen of the future. As with derby’s they are only as successful as the people and businesses who donate their goods or services for the many prizes we give out. And at this derby we have many prizes, live and silent auctions, raffles and door prizes. We always ask our participants to patronize those businesses for the generosity. If you are planning on participating in the derby and can offer a donation, it’s never too late! You can bring it with you. Below are some items we have for raffle.

Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug 21/17

Monday, August 21st, 2017

Port Renfrew Marina continues to see awesome Chinook fishing. Fishermen are saying this quality of catches is what brought them out here years ago. All the usual fishing spots are good but East Point and Camper Creek seem to be the most consistent. Port Renfrew is not always a first light bite, quite often it can be easily afternoon when things light up. Anchovies and Coho killers are working best.

Coho season is coming up soon and should be a fantastic one. Predictions are for the best returns since 1994 and early fishing reports from the bank seems to prove that it is probably true. There are acres of Coho our there feeding on krill and herring, so our late September and early October fishing should be epic.

Notable catches:

  • Joanne Skakun  4 from 15 to 20 lbs
  • Aaron Keller    29
  • Eric Echdahl  30.5
  • Mike Game, John Horgan & Lyle Gurney  6 fish

Derby’s cannot be successful without these contributions and we ask if anyone out there can offer a donation or knows a business that would be willing to donate to please either bring the donation in or give us a contact. Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug. 14/17

Sunday, August 13th, 2017

At Port Renfrew Marina spring fishing is still continuing to be strong with an interesting twist. One day an angler may have an 8 to 10 hookup day and the next maybe have only 1. A number of fishermen have commented on this as success seems to favor different boats on different days but I guess that is fishing ! Owen Point closes August 15 so watch for the boundary marker that is on the shore just before the Rockpile which is probably a good spot to start your troll.

Notable Catch:

  •  Wynter Langston & Bob Culm 34.5
  • Reuben Radford & Joanne Skakun  32

On Sunday morning there is a bullhead derby for children 12 and under with a prize for the most caught by a boy and a girl.

Another Event: Port Renfrew Marina will be having another annual Coho fishing derby “Winner Take All” planned this year for Sept.30th and Oct.1st. This derby is extremely popular with all anglers and when you see the winnings you can understand why. Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug.10/17

Thursday, August 10th, 2017

Port Renfrew Chinook fishing remains strong all along the beach. Early morning at East Point has been very good but the crowds of boats tend to make for combat fishing. Not for the timid! If you are into evening fishing East Point will have hardly and boats and the fishing turns on again towards dark.Camper Creek is still “old reliable.” It continues to produce quality springs all season long.

Anchovies are the bait of choice but a whole herring trolled without a flasher can be dynamite. As for lures, Coho killers, skinny G spoons are doing well as is a white hootchy on a short 32″ leader.

The chicken ranch is still hot for springs and Coho. The halibut at Bouy Juliet have kind of dried up for now but on the bright side anchoring up closer to shore is working again.

Crabbing has tapered off some but most people are still coming is with a couple and still a good size.

This year Owen Point closes Aug. 15 to Sept. 15 not the usual Aug. 1

Notable catches:

  • Mike Graham  28
  • Al                       33
  • Colleen Luttman  30
  • Shane Morse  31

Upcoming Event: Coming up soon on Sept.2 and 3rd is Port Renfrew Marina’s annual Labor Day salmon derby. This year will be the 20th! If you have been before you know how much fun it is and if you haven’t you should come and see for yourself! This year the tickets will be sold at Bucky’s in Duncan and at the marina. If you buy your ticket from Bucky’s you will need to come by the office when you get to the marina to get your t-shirt. The tickets are $65.00 a rod and include a Port Renfrew Marina t-shirt, dinner on Sunday, beverages and a live band. The proceeds will go to the local San Juan salmon hatchery to help keep salmon stocks healthy and strong, not just for you and I but for generations to come. Come out and support this great cause and have fun doing it.

Another Event: Coming up also will be Port Renfrew Marina’s annual “Winner Take All” Coho derby. This one is insanely popular and for good reason. The tickets are $25.00 a rod with $5.00 of each ticket going to the hatchery and the rest into a pot for the person who catches the biggest Coho. The pot on average runs around $10,000.00 cash! It’s a great way to end the fishing season in Renfrew as the waters tend to get to rough after mid October and the rains come.
