Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug. 14/17

At Port Renfrew Marina spring fishing is still continuing to be strong with an interesting twist. One day an angler may have an 8 to 10 hookup day and the next maybe have only 1. A number of fishermen have commented on this as success seems to favor different boats on different days but I guess that is fishing ! Owen Point closes August 15 so watch for the boundary marker that is on the shore just before the Rockpile which is probably a good spot to start your troll.

Notable Catch:

  •  Wynter Langston & Bob Culm 34.5
  • Reuben Radford & Joanne Skakun  32

Coming Event: Coming soon will be Port Renfrew Marina's 20th annual Labor Day spring derby. It is on Sept.2nd and 3rd this year. This derby has long been a favorite of all who attend with two days of spring fishing and on the Sunday there is the presentations for the best catches. There is also a dinner which this year will be beef dip with cole slaw and beverages. All entrants get a Port Renfrew Marina t-shirt and on Sunday evening there is a live band. The tickets are $65.00 a rod and are available at Port Renfrew Marina and also at Bucky's in Duncan. Proceeds go to the local San Juan salmon hatchery. On Sunday morning there is a bullhead derby for children 12 and under with a prize for the most caught by a boy and a girl.

Another Event: Port Renfrew Marina will be having another annual Coho fishing derby "Winner Take All" planned this year for Sept.30th and Oct.1st. This derby is extremely popular with all anglers and when you see the winnings you can understand why. The most common winnings are around $10,00.00 cash. The tickets will be sold at Port Renfrew marina at the time of the derby and they are $25.00 a rod with $5.00 of each ticket going to the hatchery. You can fish for Coho for two days, have a good time and if luck is with you go home with a pile of cash and know that the event has helped the hatchery out with ongoing expenses.
