Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug 21/17

Port Renfrew Marina continues to see awesome Chinook fishing. Fishermen are saying this quality of catches is what brought them out here years ago. All the usual fishing spots are good but East Point and Camper Creek seem to be the most consistent. Port Renfrew is not always a first light bite, quite often it can be easily afternoon when things light up. Anchovies and Coho killers are working best. Coho season is coming up soon and should be a fantastic one. Predictions are for the best returns since 1994 and early fishing reports from the bank seems to prove that it is probably true. There are acres of Coho our there feeding on krill and herring, so our late September and early October fishing should be epic.

Notable catches:

  • Joanne Skakun  4 from 15 to 20 lbs
  • Aaron Keller    29
  • Eric Echdahl  30.5
  • Mike Game, John Horgan & Lyle Gurney  6 fish

Coming Event: Soon it will be Port Renfrew Marina's 20th annual Labor Day derby. This year it is on Sept. 2nd and 3rd. Tickets are available at the marina and also this year we have them at Bucky's in Duncan. Tickets are $65.00 a rod and includes a Port Renfrew Marina t-shirt, dinner, beverages and a live band on Sunday after the prize presentations. At this derby we have many prizes, live and silent auctions, raffles and door prizes. We have many businesses and individuals who donate to this derby and we always ask our participants to patronize those businesses for the generosity. Derby's cannot be successful without these contributions and we ask if anyone out there can offer a donation or knows a business that would be willing to donate to please either bring the donation in or give us a contact. Time is of the essence now and we are working hard to make sure we have lots of prizes to make this a great derby. Proceeds of this derby are going to the San Juan salmon hatchery here in Port Renfrew.

Upcoming Event: Coming up after the Labor Day derby will be our annual Coho derby "Winner Take All" and this derby is always extremely popular and this year should be great with the Coho predictions. This derby will be September 30th and October 1st and tickets are $25.00 a rod with $5.00 of each ticket going to the San Juan salmon hatchery also. With this derby as most of you know there is only one winner and the prize is cash, the winnings vary depending on participants but the pot is usually around the $10,000.00 mark and has been as high as $14,500.00. Again with Coho predictions this year the turn out could be huge and that makes the pot huge!

Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug. 14/17

At Port Renfrew Marina spring fishing is still continuing to be strong with an interesting twist. One day an angler may have an 8 to 10 hookup day and the next maybe have only 1. A number of fishermen have commented on this as success seems to favor different boats on different days but I guess that is fishing ! Owen Point closes August 15 so watch for the boundary marker that is on the shore just before the Rockpile which is probably a good spot to start your troll.

Notable Catch:

  •  Wynter Langston & Bob Culm 34.5
  • Reuben Radford & Joanne Skakun  32

Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug.10/17

Port Renfrew Chinook fishing remains strong all along the beach. Early morning at East Point has been very good but the crowds of boats tend to make for combat fishing. Not for the timid! If you are into evening fishing East Point will have hardly and boats and the fishing turns on again towards dark.Camper Creek is still "old reliable." It continues to produce quality springs all season long. Anchovies are the bait of choice but a whole herring trolled without a flasher can be dynamite. As for lures, Coho killers, skinny G spoons are doing well as is a white hootchy on a short 32" leader.

The chicken ranch is still hot for springs and Coho. The halibut at Bouy Juliet have kind of dried up for now but on the bright side anchoring up closer to shore is working again.

Crabbing has tapered off some but most people are still coming is with a couple and still a good size.

This year Owen Point closes Aug. 15 to Sept. 15 not the usual Aug. 1

Notable catches:

  • Mike Graham  28
  • Al                       33
  • Colleen Luttman  30
  • Shane Morse  31

Sorry for all the head chops!!

Upcoming Event: Coming up soon on Sept.2 and 3rd is Port Renfrew Marina's annual Labor Day salmon derby. This year will be the 20th! If you have been before you know how much fun it is and if you haven't you should come and see for yourself! This year the tickets will be sold at Bucky's in Duncan and at the marina. If you buy your ticket from Bucky's you will need to come by the office when you get to the marina to get your t-shirt. The tickets are $65.00 a rod and include a Port Renfrew Marina t-shirt, dinner on Sunday, beverages and a live band. The proceeds will go to the local San Juan salmon hatchery to help keep salmon stocks healthy and strong, not just for you and I but for generations to come. Come out and support this great cause and have fun doing it.

Another Event: Coming up also will be Port Renfrew Marina's annual "Winner Take All" Coho derby. This one is insanely popular and for good reason. The tickets are $25.00 a rod with $5.00 of each ticket going to the hatchery and the rest into a pot for the person who catches the biggest Coho. The pot on average runs around $10,000.00 cash! It's a great way to end the fishing season in Renfrew as the waters tend to get to rough after mid October and the rains come.

Port Renfrew Marina Report July 31/17

At Port Renfrew Marina Chinook fishing along the coast has slowed a bit with the morning ebb tides and will improve with early floods in the coming week. They are still feeding on needlefish and baby herring so keep your lures and bait small. You may hear reports from guys fishing this past week, some reporting it very slow and others coming in with 3 to 5 springs and saying they had many bites. It seems you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

The ranch is back on for halibut, they like the ebb currents. Chinook fishing is hard as it is a struggle to get your lures through the Coho. There are acres of them.

Crabbing is still very good, the crabs are quite large and still hard shelled.

Notable catches:

  • Rueben Radford 32
  • Roko Kliman  33
  • Robert Culm & Wynter Langston 4 springs up to 35
  • Joanne (of Is. Outfitters) 32
  • Kristina Ledger  3 up to 28
  • John Holman  32

Coming up soon in the season will be Port Renfrew Marina's annual Labor Day Derby on September 2nd and 3rd. This derby is held to help out the local San Juan salmon hatchery and for those of you who don't know this hatchery has had little or no monies from the government since 1992. Without outside support and donations this hatchery would likely not be active. If anyone seeing this can offer to help out with donation prizes or knows of a business that might be interested please contact the marina office. As you know a successful derby relies on the generosity of donators for prizes to make a derby exciting and fun which is turn brings more anglers and then raises more money for the particular cause. More details to come. See below for our first raffle item for the Labor Day Derby.
